Great, I loved it. Now how do I apply it?
I agree 100% on the issue of the 'good' vs 'bad' student. I can point out to you the self motivated students, and those who only care about passing & getting the piece of paper. These days we have a lot of 'pass motivated' students, and so we have to deal with this issue.
On my office wall, I have a postcard, it read
"I hear & forget, I see & remember, I do and understand." This neatly summarises a lot of the principles.
However back to the real question: "How do we make sure that our objectives are right, and that our assessment and learning activities are aligned with this?"
(I agree we need to get this lot aligned, but I don't think I'm doing it well, and this is causing problems for me)
Interesting video... one of my teachers in secondary school once told me 'you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink'... I think he was wrong!
Aligning objectives with assessment does work - I saw it in action in my students last week! Nothing quite as effective than getting students to explain an idea to each other!
Wow, thanks for that. Okay constructive alignment is really not a new topic. I think we need to get to the root of the issue. Let's look at our exams and let's look at our objectives in our module documents are they aligned? I have a sneaking feeling that it may not be. So the big question really is "What will my students be able to do after my course?" Your exams NEED to reflect that. So we need to start looking at our Learning outcomes. Are they breeding strategic learners that they learn our material and forget?
